How to Scrape Shopify Store Data with an API
March 5, 2026 · 5 min read
Shopify powers over 4 million online stores. If you're building price monitoring tools, competitive intelligence dashboards, or AI agents that need product data, you need a reliable way to extract it.
The Problem with Traditional Scraping
Most developers start with Puppeteer or Playwright — spin up a headless browser, navigate to pages, parse HTML. This works until it doesn't:
- Rate limiting and IP blocks
- JavaScript-rendered content that's hard to parse
- Maintenance burden when store layouts change
- Infrastructure costs for running headless browsers
A Better Approach: API-First Extraction
ShelfRun takes a different approach. Instead of rendering pages, we detect the store's platform and use its native data endpoints. For Shopify, that means products.json, category APIs, and structured data.
Quick Start: One API Call
curl -X POST https://api.shelfrun.com/v1/quickscan -H "X-API-Key: sr_live_your_key_here" -d '{"url": "allbirds.com"}'Response:
{
"products_found": 247,
"platform": "shopify",
"products": [
{
"name": "Tree Runner",
"price": 98.00,
"currency": "USD",
"in_stock": true,
"image_url": "https://..."
}
]
}Python Example
from shelfrun import ShelfRun
sr = ShelfRun(api_key="sr_live_...")
products = sr.quickscan("allbirds.com")
for p in products[:5]:
print(p['name'] + ': $' + str(p['price']))What You Get
Every product extraction returns standardized JSON with:
- Product name, description, brand
- Price and compare-at price (sale detection)
- Stock status (in stock / out of stock)
- Images, variants, categories
- Product URL for linking back
Supported Platforms
ShelfRun supports compatible e-commerce platforms including Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Magento, and custom stores with sitemaps. See the full list on our platforms page.
